orochon ramen. for spice lovers.

we finally went to Orochon Ramen to see what all the fuss was about. the other night when we went to mr. ramen, we were supposed to go to orochon but the wait list was too long and they wouldn't put us on the list cuz they were bout to close.

we found out about this place from watching man vs. food, which airs on the travel channel, and is about this guy who travels all over America to try the best "pig out" restaurants. Each show ends with a challenge, where he has to finish some kind of enormous gargantuan dish, usually with a time limit. in this episode, he goes to Orochon Ramen in Lil Tokyo, and he takes on the challenge of eating the special extremely spicy soup. he has to finish every last drop within 30 minutes, and the prize is bragging rights and your polaroid of yourself sweating buckets up on the wall of bravery, as seen here.

I dared Adrian to try the specials and attempt to take on the challenged. but he pussied out, didn't wanna try it at all.

here are the peeps who successfully succeeded at the challenge. brave folks. i would never try it. my stomach is too weak for that shit.

plus, hey, too much spicy foods causes hemorrhoids man!!! that reminds me--note: do not eat a whole bag of hot cheetos. all by yourself. not good for you. might taste good in your mouth... but not later on.

the menu is a lil complicated at first. but this is how it works:
step 1: choose a broth (miso, soy, or salt)
step 2: choose level of spiciness from 1 to 7, with 1 being the EXTREME SPICY and 7 being non-spicy.
step 3: choose your extras, ie. boiled egg, onions, chives, etc.

they also have other stuff besides soup, such as gyoza wontons, fried rice, chicken teriyaki, tempura, etc.

me and adrian chose the miso soup (most popular according to our waiter), spice level 6 (very mild spice) with a boiled egg and onions. i myself didn't like it much, thought it was a little too spicy. I'm not too fond of spicy. My tongue is really sensitive to spice. It had a taste similar to wasabi--which I hate with a passion. Adrian, on the other hand loved it, thought it was real tasty and had a nice kick to it. He loved how spicy it was--spicy but not too spicy. This was already pretty spicy, and this was level 6--the LEAST spicy. so be careful.

The fried rice was bomb. had more flavor than Mr. Ramen's fried rice. had a hint of garlic, soy sauce, and lots of egg and veggies. delicious.

Christal and Mark chose the Miso soup, non-spicy. Mark thought it was just aiight too. Christal didn't like it much though.

Atmosphere is cool, laid back. peeps are friendly. Service is good. College students everywhere, once again. I guess Lil' Tokyo is their kick it spot, being so close and everything. All in all, I thought this place was a little more hyped up than what it was cracked up to be. But Adrian loved it. If you like spicy foods, then you will love it too. Maybe you'll have the guts to take on the challenge and try spice levels 1 or 2. Good luck with that.

located in Weller Court, 3rd floor, Lil' Tokyo.
